Bellator Birmingham Recap on Newsome MMA

Bellator’s European Series returned on Saturday night as the promotion headed to Birmingham’s Resorts World Arena with a stacked card.

Headlining was local boy Tim Wilde, who made the short trip from Wolverhampton to take on the former Bellator lightweight champion Brent Primus, who was looking to bounce back after losing the belt in his last fight.

Fabian “The Assassin” Edwards was in the co-main event as he took on Falco Neto Lopes in a middleweight contest. SBG lightweight Pedro Carvalho faced off against Derek Campos and Bellator Kickboxing welterweight champion Raymond “The Human Highlight Reel” Daniels made his return to MMA against Wilker Barros.

The prelims were also a stacked affair with Yannick Bahati, Lee Chadwick, Saul Rogers and many more top fighters in action.

This event recap will cover the chosen featured fight from Newsome MMA along with the usual Newsome MMA Performance Awards. There will also be a full list of the official results at the bottom of this recap too.

Featured fight: Fabian Edwards vs. Falco Neto Lopes

The pressure was on Edwards coming into this middleweight bout as he had a 6-0 record to protect and a home audience to impress, but he didn’t let any pressure affect him at all.

It was clear Neto had a game plan coming into this fight. He wanted the fight on the floor and after the opening flurries he tried to take Edwards down with a single leg but he only got him against the cage. The Birmingham boy though was able to escape the position with a smart bit of foot and clinch work.

This didn’t deter Neto from trying again though but he only got the same result. After a trip, he eventually got “The Assassin” on his back.

Edwards was quick to react though throwing and landing an up-kick to Neto. The Portuguese man didn’t move so Edwards threw another up-kick and it landed again. Neto didn’t move again. Neto was then caught by another two up-kicks which forced him up but he now was looking rocked on his feet. This didn’t matter to Edwards though, who popped up and landed a nice overhand right which dropped Neto, before finishing off with the follow up punches on the ground.

The up-kicks had been the damaging blows for Neto and on any other night this would have been a KO of the Night for Edwards but Raymond Daniels’ 720 Tornado spinning punch had already sealed that for the American.

Edwards climbs to 7-0 with that performance and now the question is, where does he go from here. The young fighter told the press that he wants another fight as soon as possible and with the London card on the horizon, that is a possibility. But who would he take on there? No one, not even Bellator’s match makers know the answer to that question yet.
